In 1974, George Carel and his son Tony create an all-leather slipper with a grosgrain bow. They name it “Marquis” with reference to ancient royal shoes. As elegant as a pump but as soft as an inner slipper, it conquers Parisian women’s hearts and becomes the iconic model of the brand in a couple of seasons. Little by little, with no ads nor star endorsement, it appears on the feet of all the schoolgirls of Saint-Germain, Neuilly and Victor Hugo where Tony Carel has simply placed the shoe in the shops’ windows.  Mothers give them to their daughters when they pass their final high school exams… Year after year, the model is declined in a variety of colours: cardinal red, bottle-green, yellow but also pale pink or baby blue.

For its fortieth birthday, the Marquis has been honoured by Parisian trendy shops like Colette, Kitsuné or Smets. Daughters take their moms to the shops, friends of friends spread the word, elegant foreigners adopt this soft slipper. In velvet, brocade, two-tone or metallic leather, the Marquis twirls around and once again becomes top of the class. It even got a successful lifting in 2015, and its modernised fit is softer than a sneaker’s.
